Obverse

By Fraser Parker

Once again, the impossible has been made to look effortless. Obverse is another genuine breakthrough for Fraser and, in many ways, the ideal solution he has been searching for over the years. After returning to old notebooks, the answer finally fell into place.

This is the most elegant and streamlined way to perform the classic Which Hand effect with nothing but your words and any ordinary small object. A spectator hides the object for three rounds, and each time you know where it is. There is no convoluted process, no mathematics, and no repeated procedure. Everything appears simple, direct, and completely fair.

What makes Obverse so beautiful is that the method and effect run along the same lines to the point that they may as well be one and the same. The method is inherent within the effect itself, perfectly married to the illusion, with each disappearing into the other. The illusion gives the method just enough room to work, and the method in turn creates the illusion, until both feel seamlessly interwoven. It looks exactly as it would if you were doing it for real with no method at all.

A spectator simply thinks of a sequence of moves in their mind, careful not to be influenced by the performer. That is all. What appears to be nothing more than the natural set-up of the effect becomes the entire hidden engine. Within moments, you know everything.

What makes this absurd is how simple it is. There is effectively one line of scripting, spoken as a way to set up the game, that looks entirely natural and exactly how it would if you were to play the game with no method at work. That is it. No technology, no logical puzzles, no gimmicks. Fraser has looked at how everyone approaches the Which Hand plot and thrown the whole playbook out.

And it does not end there. This new principle also allows the sequence to be controlled or predicted in advance, even to the point where a second spectator can seemingly predict exactly what will happen. Obverse is effortless, devastating, and as close to real as this plot has ever felt when relying on nothing more than linguistics.
